Globe in a classroom

About Social Studies Education

Social studies teachers have the unique opportunity to teach adolescents how government functions, their place in history, and to think critically about the world. Social studies teachers engage students in lesson plans that address the expected outcomes of their state and/or school district. They achieve this through lectures, group projects, tests, writing assignments, and even plays and videos. In all of it, a social studies teacher weaves history, government, world geography, and civics to help students become more well-rounded and globally engaged citizens.

The demand for postsecondary teachers is growing. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a 15 percent growth rate for subject matter middle and high school teachers through at least 2028.

According to the BLS, high school teachers were paid a median salary of $58,030 and middle school teachers were paid a median of $56,720. Advancing your academic credentials and accruing experience can help boost your pay over your career.

Along with preparing students for positions of history or social studies teachers in middle and high schools, the master’s in social studies is a good foundation for doctoral study or law school.

Students in the History and Social Studies Education Department conduct research and serve internships at regional, national, and international museums, including:

  • The Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society
  • The Buffalo Museum of Science
  • The Burchfield-Penney Art Center
  • Old Fort Niagara
  • Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site
  • Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C.)

Buffalo’s Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum has donated second-floor gallery space where museum studies students design and arrange displays. Students also have the opportunity to participate in campus organizations to enhance their leadership skills.

Great Location

Our department is located in the heart of historic Buffalo. Our students benefit highly from our close proximity to historically significant buildings, museums, and organizations, as well as a plethora of urban, suburban, and rural schools.

Stellar Faculty

Our award-winning faculty provide a broad range of views and are well-regarded in the field.

Small Class Size

Most courses in the social studies education program have 12 students or fewer, so you can receive individualized attention from professors.
