Buffalo State’s media production major prepares students for careers in audio, radio, video, and television production. Students develop skills in storytelling, writing, research, cinematography, lighting, sound, and production management in studio and field settings. Graduates pursue careers in film, television, radio, digital media, advertising, journalism, and social media. The program is among a select number of SUNY media production and broadcasting programs affiliated with ACEJMC.

Degree Offered

Media Production, B.A.: The study of media production integrates many skills: researching, writing, storyboarding, fundraising, and other aspects of organizing video and audio preproduction; working on site with crew, actors and participants to record and film audio and video productions; familiarity with both field and studio protocols; mastery of techniques for creative cinematography, expressive lighting and professional sound recording under a variety of field and studio conditions, and development of storytelling abilities in post-production from editing to visual effects. Compare this major with communication studies, journalism, and public relations and advertising.

Scholarships: Scholarship opportunities available to media production students include the John Roneker Memorial Scholarship, Dr. Julia A. Piquette Communication Scholarship, Charles Y. Adair Award, Dr. Charles A. Messner Scholarship Fund, and Estelle M. Engel Memorial Scholarship.

Honors Society: Lambda Pi Eta is the National Communication Association’s official honor society at four-year colleges and universities. As an accredited member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), Lambda Pi Eta has active chapters at four-year colleges and universities worldwide, including Buffalo State. 

Student Newspaper: The Record is the student-run campus newspaper where students can serve as reporters, editorial writers, and editors. 

Student TV and Film: Bengal Film and Television Productions is a student-run television channel that features news, sports, student-produced shows, and films.

Student Radio: WBNY-FM 91.3 offers students the opportunity to enter radio broadcasting. Students cover news stories, sports, music, talk shows, and promotions. 

Media production students are encouraged to intern in radio stations, television stations, or production companies before they graduate.
