Dear Members of the Buffalo State University Community,

In response to the recent horrific events in Israel and Gaza, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We echo SUNY Chancellor King's sentiment and stand with our students, faculty, and community members affected by these events.

I write this message to express a fundamental truth that is at the core of our shared humanity—every person, regardless of race, nationality, faith, or political ideology, deserves to live free from terrorism. There is a profound sadness in witnessing the suffering that arises from violent conflicts. The pain and loss of innocent lives are stark reminders of our collective failure to uphold the highest principles of human rights, justice, and freedom.

Through the Buffalo State University JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion) philosophical paradigm, we truly believe that peace cannot be achieved through violence, and justice cannot be realized through oppression. True progress is nurtured when we uphold the rights and freedoms of all individuals and honor diversity. Let us stand against terrorism and oppression in all their forms, for they are the enemies of freedom and a threat to our shared humanity. Let us champion justice, for it is the cornerstone of a fair society. And let us strive for a world where human rights are not just a dream but a reality for all.

Our focus remains on the welfare and needs of our Buffalo State University community. We understand that many in our community may be fearing for the safety and well-being of colleagues, friends, and loved ones in the region. In these trying times, we are committed to maintaining a climate of civility, promoting constructive conversation, and maintaining safe spaces for our campus community.

To this end, we have counselors available to help support our students, faculty, and staff members who are coping with the emotional impact of this tragedy.

Students may visit or contact the Counseling Center in the Weigel Wellness Center by phone at (716) 878-4436 or by email at counselingcenter@buffalostate.edu.

Faculty and staff members may seek assistance from the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) by emailing eap@buffalostate.edu or by leaving a confidential voicemail at (716) 878-6699. A coordinator will promptly return the call.

Sincerely,

Bonita R. Durand, Ph.D.
Buffalo State University Interim President
