Lecture and Performance: Matthew Burch, Electric Chinese Guzheng and Chair-emin

Matthew Burch is a student of the Buffalo State wood/furniture design and industrial technology programs. He has won many awards for his designs and has been nominated for the SUNY Chancellors Award for Student Excellence and Presidents Medal for Outstanding Student. This event is a culmination of his work as an undergraduate that premieres two unique musical instruments re-envisioned and built to change the musical experience for both musician and audience.

The GZ: 2.0 is the second Electric Chinese Guzheng (Goo-Jung) in the world, both produced by Burch.

The Chair-emin is a modified chair with a built in Theremin that aims to provide both comfort and full range playability for the musician.


Matthew will unveil both instruments with a talk about his concept and design approach as well as his production process, followed by a live demonstration and musical performance with accompaniment.
