Alternative Summer Break

12:00 a.m. 12:00 a.m. End Time
All day | New Orleans

Ten students will engage in education, service and critical reflection during their summer break as part of the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center's Alternative Break program.  The team has been immersed in orientation meetings where they build community and learn about the trip's central social issues, food security and the environment.

The group, led by student leaders Felecia Malcolm and Stephanie Hanson, will be serving the New Orleans community through hands-on projects with Youth Rebuilding New Orleans, The School at Blair Grocery and Second Harvest Food Bank.  The focus of their trip experience is understanding root causes of food access and how environmental factors, such as Hurricane Katrina, urban pollution, and city planning impact residents' access to affordable, healthy food.
