Alternative Spring Break

All day | Sky Meadows State Park, VA and Boston, MA

Twenty-two students will engage in education, service, and critical reflection during their spring break as part of the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center's Alternative Break program. The two teams have been immersed in orientation meetings where they build community and learn about the trip's central social issue.  

One group, led by student leaders Meredith Lyons and Kyle Messina, will be serving the Boston community through hands-on projects with the Oasis Coalition, Greater Boston Food Bank, and Room to Grow. The focus of their trip experience is understanding root causes of Pedlow, assistant chief of Police will serve as the experience's trip advisor.  

The other group, led by student leaders Cheyanne Smith and Ruth Luzak, will be returning to a partnership established in 2014 with Sky Meadows State Park in Virginia.  Throughout the week the students will be collaborating with the park to build hiking trails in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Appalachian Trail. The focus of their trip experience is understanding the importance of environmental conservation and stewardship, along with everyday ways that we all can be stewards of the earth. Lauren Turner, staff assistant in Professional Development will serve as the experience's trip advisor.
