Communication Department Hosting Journalism Workshop

Aspiring journalists will have an opportunity to learn about all aspects of journalism during a weeklong workshop at Buffalo State to be held August 12–16.

The Communication Department is hosting the "Summer Workshop for High School Journalists," designed for students who will be juniors or seniors in the fall.

“The main reason for organizing this conference is to introduce budding journalists to the skills they’ll need for effective reporting,” said Annemarie Franczyk, assistant professor of communication, who is coordinating the workshop. “They also get a lot of exposure to professionals.”

Print, television, and multimedia journalists from the Buffalo market will join Buffalo State communication faculty in sharing their expertise on everything from interviewing skills to video production. This year, the Buffalo Association of Black Journalists also will send a member to lead one of the sessions.

“Students will learn various journalistic skills—interviewing, feature writing, photography and video editing—and put those skills to work, interviewing the newsmakers we will bring to campus,” Franczyk said. “They’ll have access to our equipment, including computers that have the kind of editing software used by professional journalists.”

At the end of the week, students will share the results of their interviews and research. They will also publish multimedia reports online.

Franczyk emphasized that the department is accepting applications from students in the city, the suburbs, public, and private schools. In 2011 when Buffalo State hosted the first journalism workshop, a mix of students participated and learned from one another.

Along with learning key skills needed for college journalism programs, attending the summer workshop provides students with connections with professionals, which could lead to internships or jobs in the future. Additionally, the workshop introduces high schoolers to Buffalo State’s stellar Communication Department.

“We would like to show students what we have here, let them become familiar with the campus, and use it as a base of comparison when they start looking for college programs,” Franczyk said.

The cost of the workshop is $150, which includes all supplies and lunch for the five days. To participate, students must apply by May 31. Space is limited and early registration is recommended.

Journalism Student Lands CBS Sports Internship

When famed filmmaker Spike Lee spoke at Buffalo State in fall 2011, Oliver W. Colbert took one of Lee’s message to heart: “You’ll never work a day in your life if you do something you love.”

Colbert realized he could make a living doing what he loved—writing—and changed his major to journalism.

“I never looked back,” Colbert said.

A Brooklyn native, Colbert is now looking ahead to an exciting opportunity to intern at CBS Sports in New York City this summer.

“I knew that if I ever had the opportunity to write about sports, whether for TV or print, I would jump on it,” said Colbert. After a phone interview, he was hired for a position in the CBS Sports’ New Media Department, which oversees advertising.

“It’s more PR than writing, but it’s a foot in the door and a big name I can put on my resume,” Colbert said.

Nina M. Silberstein, ’85, who studied journalism at Buffalo State, is helping Colbert in his journey with a $1,000 scholarship she designated for a journalism student in need. Silberstein is a medical writer/copy editor for the corporate office of Banfield Pet Hospital in Portland, Oregon. She also wrote freelance articles for various publications for years.

“Being a writer, I know how hard it is. The competition is fierce. It’s important to have people support you along the way to help you reach your goals,” Silberstein said on her decision to make the gift to Buffalo State. “It’s one thing to get support from family and friends, but when people in the outside world support you, it makes you feel good.”

Silberstein also had a personal reason for her gift. She recently underwent radiation treatment for breast cancer and has been cancer-free for one year.

“A lot of people who didn’t know me took good care of me and basically saved my life,” she said. “Providing this scholarship is one way of giving back.”

Television and Film Arts Film Forum: May 10

The public is invited to watch a collection of student-produced short films during the sixth annual Television and Film Arts (TFA) Film Forum, Friday, May 10, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union Social Hall.

TFA students submitted films ranging from parodies to mysteries to the forum. To determine which films will be screened, Jeffrey Hirschberg, director of television and film arts, and Lou Rera, associate professor of communication, are judging the submissions based on overall technical and creative quality.

"At the end of each semester, TFA hosts the Film Forum to promote our students' short films and enable them to talk about their work in front of an audience," said Hirschberg. "This is an important step in helping TFA majors prepare for careers in the entertainment industry."

The two-hour program will include a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers. Admission is free.

Faculty and Staff Appeal 2013: Adza Beda

Of all the colleges Adza Beda applied to, Buffalo State was the only one that provided full tuition coverage, thanks to a number of scholarships she received to pair with a federal Pell Grant. The Buffalo native and Muriel A. Howard Honors Program student received scholarships from the McNair Scholars Program, the Buffalo Federal Women’s Club, and the Statler Foundation.

“I’m so grateful” said Beda. “I will be able to finish college in four years with very little debt.”

The junior with the powerful smile is on target to graduate in spring 2014. At that time, she plans to attend graduate school and pursue a career in documentary filmmaking. She also hopes to write articles for National Geographic Magazine.

Beda arrived at Buffalo State in the summer of 2010 as a pre-freshman in the Hospitality and Tourism Department with dreams of becoming a chef. The staff at the Student Support Services Program helped her set goals for her college career, one of which was to earn a 4.0 grade point average, which she achieved her first two semesters.

After taking a wide range of courses, she changed majors several times before falling in love with documentary filmmaking through the Communication Department. And she is tenaciously ensuring she still graduates on time by taking at least five courses each semester. During some of those semesters, she also has held part-time jobs, such as an AmeriCorps position working with at-risk youth in a West Side community center.

While living at home with her family, Beda has still managed to stay involved on campus through the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and by participating in campus events such as karaoke nights and camping trips.

Beda described her time at Buffalo State as “a maturing process that has prepared me to move forward in life and graduate school.”

Without the scholarships, she knows she either wouldn’t have been able to attend college or it would have taken her much longer to complete her degree.

“I appreciate everyone who contributes to the scholarship funds,” she said. “They may not know it, but they make a difference.”

In the News: Grad Students Start Youth Group

Two Buffalo State graduate students were recognized by the Buffalo News for their efforts to clean up Buffalo.

Jason Hall is pursuing a degree in creative studies; Katrina Whitlow is studying public relations. Together, the News reported that they have formed 1WNY4U, a group whose mission is “to get youth volunteers involved in community projects.”

They plan to bring 1WNY4U to the upcoming National Veterans Golden Age Games for Western New York, which is seeking 3,000 volunteers.

Niman to Join Distinguished Speakers at Harvard Conference

Michael Niman, professor of communication at SUNY Buffalo State, has been invited to speak at “Deep Capture: Psychology, Public Relations, Democracy, and Law,” a conference to be held at the Harvard Law School on April 13. Other featured speakers include noted scholar and activist Noam Chomsky, cultural studies expert Sut Jhally, and consumer culture authority Stuart Ewen.

Several Harvard faculty members, including Francesca Gino, Jon Hanson, and Susan Linn will also speak.

The conference’s organizers are the National Lawyers Guild, Harvard Law School Chapter, and the Project on Law and Mind Sciences, also of the Harvard Law School. According to its website, the conference hopes to explore the history of public relations, the industry’s strategies and tactics, and the public’s vulnerability to marketing manipulation.

“I’m honored to be sharing a podium with some of the top scholars in my field,” said Niman, author of People of the Rainbow: A Nomadic Utopia and an award-winning syndicated columnist. “These folks have had a great influence on my work.”

Niman, a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, is currently focusing his research on propaganda, the influence of consumer culture, temporary autonomous zones, nonviolent conflict resolution, and nonhierarchical societies and movements.

His April 13 presentation, “Journalism in a PR World,” will examine “the migration of talent from journalism to the PR industry, the collapse of mainstream journalism and the role of an emergent alternative media as American journalism goes through metamorphosis from what it was to what it could become.”

Teacher-turned-Silicon Valley marketing guru Bill Cleary, '69, '73, returns to SUNY Buffalo State on Tuesday, March 5, at 7:00 p.m. to present “How Apple and Steve Jobs Changed Marketing,” an insider's view of the world’s most innovative company.

The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Burchfield Penney Art Center Auditorium. A question-and-answer period will follow the talk.

As consumer marketing manager at Apple Computer in the 1980s, Cleary helped launch the company’s groundbreaking Apple //e and //c products. The Buffalo State alumnus then cofounded CKS Group, one of the Silicon Valley’s most technologically savvy advertising agencies. CKS was instrumental in launching several major web brands including Amazon.com, Ebay, and Yahoo, and provided early web communications strategies for Apple Computer, Disney, General Motors, United Airlines, and Mitsubishi, among others.

Today, Cleary is the owner of Cleary & Partners, a California-based strategic marketing, branding, and technology services firm.

Cleary’s presentation will offer an insider’s view of the last 30-plus years of Apple’s exciting and innovative marketing programs and how Steve Jobs personally transformed computers, smartphones, retail, and the motion picture and music industries.

After earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in secondary education (with a concentration in cultural anthropology) from Buffalo State, Cleary taught American history, anthropology, and African American studies at Lake Shore High School in Angola, New York, from 1972 to 1978. In 1977, he completed a Fulbright-Hays scholar program at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt.

In 1978, Cleary shifted his career focus to business and he moved to New York City to work as an advertising firm copywriter. He contributed to the marketing of popular brands such as Pepsi, Pizza Hut, and Welch Foods before being recruited to join the fledgling Apple Computer in Cupertino, California, in 1981.

“The basis of this talk is a presentation that I’ve given before at Harvard and Santa Clara University, but I’ve customized it for my alma mater,” said Cleary. “I’ll talk about how my Buffalo State coursework helped me get the job at Apple, what it was like to work with Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, what made Apple great, and what challenges the company faced. And I’m hoping students come ready with questions.”

This Year of the City presentation is sponsored by Buffalo State’s Institutional Advancement Office, Small Business Development Center, Business Department Marketing Club, and Anthropology, Business, and Communication departments.

TFA Night at the Oscars: February 24

Students in the television and film arts (TFA) program will roll out the red carpet at the fourth annual TFA Night at the Oscars party, Sunday, February 24, at 8:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall.

Guests will have the opportunity to participate in pre-ceremony interviews, watch the Academy Awards on a giant screen, and enjoy refreshments. Approximately 300 people are expected to attend.

The TFA Night at the Oscars is open to the public for $10. Students with ID will be admitted for free. Proceeds benefit TFA scholarships and course-based trips to national and international film festivals.

The TFA Oscar party is unique because it also includes student-produced short films. The student films will be shown during the event and guests will vote for their favorite picture, director, and screenwriter.

“This is an audience award,” said TFA director Jeffrey Hirschberg. “Students are very competitive but know it’s all in good fun.”

The 16 film students who put on TFA Night at the Oscars are enrolled in Hirschberg’s TFA 301 TV and Film Criticism course.

“I give them the budget and they produce it,” Hirschberg said. “They have to find the band, secure the sponsors, and arrange the food. I try to make it an entrepreneurial effort, much like producing a film.”

Three students stepped forward this year to serve as the event’s co-chairs.

“We really want people to have a good time, support our program, and engage in the excitement of the awards season—the Oscar’s in particular,” said co-chair Grace Philips.
