'Young Artist' Winners Featured in Philharmonia Concert

Posted: March 13, 2014

The Buffalo State Philharmonia Orchestra will present its annual Young Artist Concert on Tuesday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. It is free and open to the public.

This concert, conducted by Paul Ferington, lecturer of music, features winners of the 2013–2014 Young Artist Competition held in December. Soloists include flutist Samantha Arcara performing Chaminade’s Concertino for Flute and Orchestra; soprano Kasey Heisler singing arias by Belllini and Puccini; and tenor Rob Sherman singing Broadway songs of Rodgers and Loewe. Other works on the program include the music of Johann Strauss Jr., Jean Sibelius, and contemporary American composer Kenneth Fuchs. All performers are full-time students at Buffalo State and active members of campus instrumental and choral ensembles.

Formed in fall 2009, the Philharmonia is an auditioned college-community orchestra composed of music majors and non-majors, as well as experienced community and professional musicians.
