University Police Officers Honored for Campus Initiatives

Posted: December 5, 2017

On November 17, two University Police Department officers received the Professional Service Award from the State University of New York Chiefs of Police. University Police assistant chief Amy Pedlow and officer Edward Helling received awards for initiatives on campus. Pedlow was recognized for conducting a comprehensive program to ensure the highest degree of compliance with the Clery Act at Buffalo State College; Helling was recognized for establishing the community policing initiative, “Adopt a Hall Program,” to increase engagement and partnership within the first-year residence halls including Neumann, Perry, and Porter.

The Clery Act requires colleges and universities to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses. Pedlow participated in two software updates to the police records management system Clery module that properly classifies Clery Act crimes by geography and classification. It also tracks arrests and student conduct referrals.

The “Adopt a Hall Program” has been expanded to other residence halls, due to its success. The benefits include improved University Police relationships with first-year residence hall staff and students that persist as students continue their education.
