Track & Field Sets Three School Records and Captures Eight Titles at State Championships

BROCKPORT, NY--Buffalo State set three new school records and captured eight titles at the NYSCTC Championships today at Special Olympics Stadium in Brockport. The men finished fourth of 15 teams, and the women were fifth of 16. Head Coach Eugene Lewis was voted the NYSCTC Women's Coach of the Year. Willie Hordge (Buffalo/Forrestbrook TX) was named the Male Runner of the Year, and Toya Edwards (Brooklyn/Clara Barton) was the Female Runner and Rookie of the Year.

Hordge led the men's team, winning the 200-meter dash with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 21.29, and won the 400-meter dash with an NCAA provisional time of 48.06. He also anchored the 4x100-meter relay with Shilah Richardson (Auburn/Auburn), Mario Hicks (Corning/Corning West) and Joe Russell (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) with a provisional time of 41.68. Hicks also won the 110-meter hurdles with a provisional time of 14.78, and was second in the 100-meter dash (10.77). Puka Hoching (Gouverneur/Gouverneur) added a fifth-place showing in the discus (41.41m).

Edwards led the women's team with a title in the 200-meter dash with a school record and provisional time of 24.95. She also won the 100-meter dash with a provisional time of 12.29, and paced the 4x100 relay team of Tiffany Aaron (Rochester/Wilson Magnet), LaVonne Barfield (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) and Chelsea Prophet (Buffalo/daVinci) that set new meet and school records with a provisional time of 48.28. Tenisha Jones (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) added a title, school record and provisional mark in the triple jump with a measurement of 11.45 meters.

Aaron and Prophet also finished second (12.42) and third (12.67) respectively in the 100-meter dash. Aaron was also third in the 200-meter dash (25.86), and Prophet was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.44). Jameieka Price (Niagara Falls/Aviano American) was second in the 400-meter dash (58.66), Jenelle Orosz (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) was fourth in the high jump (1.60m), and Candace Aaron (Coram/Longwood) and Kelly Tooley (N. Syracuse/CNS) were sixth (10.58m) and seventh (10.47m) respectively in the shot put.

Buffalo State will compete at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational on May 18 and 19.
