Summer Music Institute Returns to SUNY Buffalo State

Posted: May 29, 2014

Promising middle school and high school wind, percussion, and vocal musicians have the unique opportunity to study with SUNY Buffalo State Music Department faculty and students, as well as professional Western New York musicians, during the second annual Summer Music Institute.

The institute comprises two camps designed for students entering seventh through 12th grade in the fall. Students must be proficient on at least one musical instrument to attend.

The Classics Camp runs July 7-11 and includes group classes, private lessons, and ensemble performances. The Jazz Camp, which runs July 14-18, gives students the chance to study jazz improvisation with professional musicians and also take classes and perform in ensembles. Each camp runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Rockwell Hall and costs $150. At the end of the camps, students participate in a performance at the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall.

The Summer Music Institute, overseen by Rick Fleming, associate professor of music and director of bands, and Mark Filsinger, assistant professor of music, provides a way for students to hone the musical skills developed during the school year.

“Last summer, our inaugural year, went very well,” Fleming said. “Approximately 60 students from across Western New York got a comprehensive music experience—with theory, ear-training, keyboard skills, and performance. I think they were excited to study with our faculty members, some of whom also perform in professional ensembles and orchestras. We are hoping to enroll at least that many students this year.”

The Summer Music Institute is now accepting applications. For more information, call (716) 878-6504, or apply online.
