Students Invited to Design Year of the City Logo

Posted: April 10, 2012

Building on the success of the Year of the Arts, president Aaron Podolefsky has declared the 2012–2013 academic year at Buffalo State to be the Year of the City.

“We are unique in SUNY in that we’re the only four-year comprehensive institution located in a city. There is no better way to promote that fact than to make this the Year of the City,” Podolefsky said at his State of the College address on April 5.

Throughout the coming year, Buffalo State will celebrate its longstanding mission as an institution that serves the city and its commitment to enhancing the Elmwood Avenue and Grant Street neighborhoods. The theme will serve as an opportunity to bring greater public recognition to Buffalo State’s wide-ranging educational programs and research with urban emphases as well as the university’s extensive community engagement initiatives.

In order to brand the initiative, the Year of the City Planning Committee, chaired by Mark Severson, dean of the School of Natural and Social Sciences, is sponsoring a Year of the City logo design contest. The contest is open to all Buffalo State students and the winner will receive a cash award of $250.

The Year of the City logo must

  • Include the words "Year of the City"and "Buffalo State"
  • Be submitted as a vector file (if created in Photoshop, it must be redrawn as vector art)
  • Work with colors from Buffalo State’s official color palette: PMS 159 as primary/dominant color; PMS 668, PMS 617, PMS 450 as secondary/supportive colors
  • Reproduce well in 4-color, 2-color and black-and-white
  • Be easily reproduced in a variety of media (print, web, promotional items, etc.)
  • Reproduce well to a size as small as 1-inch square
  • Be distinctive, legible, and convey an immediate sense of Buffalo State’s city ties

Entries must be submitted on CD/DVD or via e-mail to Brian Kantz in College Relations (Cleveland Hall 307) or Stan Friesen (Upton Hall 211B) by Thursday, April 26. The final logo will be chosen by the College Relations Office by Tuesday, May 1, and the winner will be notified immediately.

Last year, design student David Koszka created the Year of the Arts logo as part of a project in Friesen’s Design 479 multimedia course.
