Student Giving Brings New Energy to Buffalo State

Student Giving Brings New Energy to Buffalo State

Posted: February 1, 2016

The Student Philanthropy Council (SPC) has partnered with advancement organizations around the world in celebration of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s fourth annual Student Engagement and Philanthropy Month.

Last February, SPC kicked off Buffalo State’s 2015 Student Giving Campaign. Throughout the year, student volunteers raised funds by collecting donations on Rockwell Road, hosting a coin drop in the Campbell Student Union, selling 500 orange and black cookies, and organizing the 2015 Senior Gift Challenge. They successfully raised nearly $1,400 through the generosity of our Buffalo State student donors.

Designating how the funds would be spent was determined by a student poll. Overwhelmingly it was decided that the money should be put toward something all disciplines could use and access equally. As a result, students and faculty members now have access to USB charging stations across campus. A dozen stations have been installed to allow the campus community to charge its electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, and iPads.

In November, the campus participated in Giving Tuesday, raising $1,500 for the Meeting the Gap Fund. This fund provides help for students in need of emergency financial assistance who, without this support, would be at risk of dropping out of college.

Moving forward, SPC is committed to student engagement that builds awareness, gratitude, and philanthropy at Buffalo State. During the month of February, SPC will share stories of support and organize activities to engage peers in higher education philanthropy. These activities include sending thank-you notes to over 2,000 donors, tabling in the Campbell Student Union to allow students to share what they love about Buffalo State, and partnering with the Class of 2018 to inspire young philanthropists.

Connect with SPC on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram.
