Buffalo State needed just five innings in the opener to dispose of Thomas for the second consecutive day. The Bengals belted 11 hits and plated 11 runs. Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) led the way with a 3-for-4 performance that included a single, double, triple and three RBIs. Freshman Jordan Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) was 2 for 2 with her first career homerun. Brooke Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South) and Emily Goldyn (Lancaster/Lancaster) added two hits each. Senior Melissa Balsavage (Depew/Depew) earned her second win of the season, allowing just three hits and no earned runs.
In the late game, Buffalo State finally broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Heidi Rammacher (Angola/Lakeshore) RBI single that scored Hutten who reached on an error. The one run was all the support pitcher Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster/Lancaster). She tossed a complete game, one-hitter with 11 strikeouts to earn her third win of the season. Hillary South took the hard-luck loss on the mound for D'Youville, striking out 10 and allowing no earned runs.
Buffalo State will continue its spring trip on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Southern Maine with the first pitch at 11 a.m.
