Posted: March 21, 2007
FT. MYERS, Fla.—Buffalo State (1-1) opened its softball season today with a 5-3 victory over Trinity (4-1), but its bats were quieted in the second game, falling 2-0 to Bowdoin (12-1), at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.

In the opener, Buffalo State took a 5-0 lead after a two-run sixth inning. Trinity mounted a late rally with three runs in the seventh, but the Bengals held on for the two-run victory. Jenna Schwartzmeyer (Williamsville/Williamsville South) and Jordan Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) led the Buffalo State bats. Schwartzmeyer was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Banach was 2 for 3 with a double. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster) added a triple and a run, and Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/Frontier) earned the win on the mound, allowing six hits and two earned runs, while striking out five.

Bowdoin scored runs in the first and second innings and made them stand as Buffalo State was only able to muster two hits in the game. Both hits were bunt singles by Hutten, who was 2 for 4. Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) took the hard-luck loss on the mound, surrendering just three hits and one earned run in six innings of work.

Buffalo State will play a pair of games at the Lee County Sports Complex tomorrow, facing St. Lawrence at 9 a.m. and Western New England at 1 p.m.
