Softball Rallies to Sweep Thomas

FT. MYERS, Fla.—Buffalo State (7-1) needed a late rally to complete a two-game sweep of Thomas (0-6) today at the Cape Coral Sports Complex. The Bengals won the opener, 10-0, and took the late game, 5-3.

Buffalo State needed just six innings in the first game to dispose of the Terriers, 10-0, in the opening game. Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) cruised on the mound, allowing just two hits and striking out six. She also helped herself at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a homerun and three RBIs. Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was also 3 for 4 with three runs and three stolen bases. Nicole Maher (Waterloo/Waterloo) went 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI, and Jordan Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) was 1 for 4 with a triple and an RBI.

In the second game, Thomas led 3-1 after four innings, but the Bengals roared back with a four-run fifth inning and coasted to the 5-3 win. Hutten was 3 for 3 with two runs scored, and Jessica Mooney (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/Frontier) picked up her fifth win of the season, throwing three scoreless, no-hit innings of relief and striking out six. Jess Less (Hamburg/Frontier) recorded no decision in her first collegiate start, allowing four hits and three runs with five strikeouts in four innings.

Buffalo State will wrap up its Florida trip tomorrow against UW-Whitewater and DePauw at the Lee County Sports Complex at 9 and 11 a.m. respectively.
