Ride for Roswell 2012

Posted: June 6, 2012

Whether you are an experienced bicyclist or a rider of the most recreational variety, the Ride for Roswell, Saturday, June 23, needs you. For the second year, members of the Buffalo State faculty and staff will participate in this annual ride to raise critical funds for cancer research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Riders start and finish at the University at Buffalo’s Baird Point on the North Campus and have the choice of nine routes ranging from a 3-mile family ride to one that spans 100 miles.

All participants can attend a free opening ceremony Friday, June 22, in the UB football stadium where they will receive their rider packets. The ceremony runs from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m., and features an inspirational speech by former Buffalo Bills linebacker Chris Spielman who lost his wife, Stefanie, to breast cancer in 2009, and a performance from rock vocalist Rick Springfield.

Last year, five members of the Buffalo State community took part; most rode the 30-mile route. However, participants can choose any of the routes. Spouses, friends, and family members of Buffalo State employees can join, too.

"The 30-mile route is a pretty flat route that runs along the river," said Jennifer Jackson, instructional support associate in the Biology Department who is organizing Buffalo State's riders. "I think everyone took their time. It’s a ride, not a race. They give you longer than anyone would need to complete it."

Along with a desire and ability to ride a bicycle, participants must commit to raising at least $150 for Roswell Park prior to the race ($50 for children 14 and younger). Donations go toward research and patient programs, and this year, the ride also supports the construction of a new state-of-the-art Chemo-Infusion Clinic that will serve a growing patient base and reduce wait times for services.
