Pianist to Deliver Reimagined Works of Sondheim at Burchfield Penney

Posted: October 8, 2014

Stephen Sondheim fans are in for a treat on October 10 and 11. In two performances, concert pianist Anthony de Mare will play 13 “reimagined” works from the legendary composer in The Liaisons Project at 8:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center Auditorium.

The Liaisons is Sondheim with a twist. De Mare invited 36 of the world’s foremost contemporary composers to reimagine a Sondheim song that reveals the writer's influence across multiple genres and generations. Composers hail from seven countries, range in age from 32 to 76, and span classical, pop, jazz, opera, musical theater, and film. Since 2011, de Mare has been touring iterations of Liaisons across the country to widespread critical and popular acclaim.

Along with offering remakes of such classics as “Send in the Clowns,” “No One Is Alone,” and “Color and Light,” the performance at the Burchfield Penney will include a short film of an onstage interview with Sondheim conducted by Mark Eden Horowitz at Liaisons’ New York City premiere in April 2012.

Tickets are $25 for the general public and $15 for Burchfield Penney members. For Buffalo State faculty, staff and students, the Burchfield is offering a special buy-one, get-one ticket for $15.

Call (716) 878-6011 or visit burchfieldpenney.org for tickets and information.
