Philosophy Students Participate in Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl

Posted: November 19, 2010
Six Buffalo State philosophy majors will compete in the 2010 Northeast Regional Ethics Bowl, Saturday, November 20, at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Since the beginning of the fall semester, students Matthew Guminiak, Ryan Harvey, Tom Hulbutta, Jason Offerman, Grant Tepper, and Tom Vrabel have been preparing for the competition by creating and refining arguments for 15 real-life ethical case studies.

The team competition is sponsored by the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) and covers a range of topics—including law, medicine, business, and public policy. At the competition, teams are asked questions based on 15 cases and judged on intelligibility, ethically mindful answers, and thought process. They are allowed one minute to prepare and 10 minutes to present their argument.

The Northeast Regional Ethics Bowl serves as a qualifying competition for the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, to be held in March 2011, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where the top 32 schools will compete.
