Philharmonia Seeking Additional Violinists

Posted: January 21, 2014

Violinists who would like to perform with SUNY Buffalo State’s esteemed Philharmonia have the opportunity to audition on Monday, January 27, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in Rockwell Hall 206.

"We have a sufficient number of students and community musicians in other sections of the orchestra, but we do have some openings for violins," said Paul Ferington, Philharmonia director and adjunct professor of music.

Formed in the fall of 2009, the Philharmonia is the city’s only college-community orchestra composed of music majors and non-majors, as well as experienced community and professional musicians. Every musician must commit to weekly rehearsals for one fall and two spring performances.

The group's spring concerts are scheduled for March 18 and April 29 and will include music of Handel, Dvorak, Sibelius, Vaughan-Williams, and American composer Kenneth Fuchs.

During the audition, musicians will be expected to perform a solo piece of three minutes or less plus an excerpt as posted on the Music Department website.

Those interested in auditioning need to make an appointment with Ellen Barnum at bscphil@gmail.com.
