Update November 18, 2014: Due to inclement weather, this concert has been canceled.

The Buffalo State Philharmonia, under the direction of Paul Ferington, will present its first concert of the 2014–2015 season on Tuesday, November 18, at 7:30 p.m. the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

"Russian Legacies" will feature Rimsky Korsakov’s Overture to the Tsar’s Bride; Ippolitov-Ivanov’s Caucasian Sketches; and Stravinsky’s light-hearted Circus Polka. In addition, the orchestra will play Symphonic Dances from the Russian-based masterpiece Fiddler on the Roof, in honor of the musical’s 50th anniversary year.

"The selections for our fall concert have given our student and community musicians in-depth exposure to great Russian orchestral music that isn’t frequently performed,"Ferington said. "We also wanted to pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of one of the world's most beloved musicals and recognize its Russian setting and background."

Formed in the fall of 2009 and now in its sixth season, the Philharmonia is an auditioned, college-community orchestra composed of music majors and non-majors, as well as experienced community and professional musicians. Every musician must audition and commit to weekly rehearsals for the one fall and two spring performances.
