Metals/Jewelry Faculty Member Draws Parallels between Research, Travel

Posted: October 10, 2019

Tara Nahabetian, Buffalo State associate professor of fine arts and program coordinator of the metals/jewelry program, will present “Pushing the Parameters: Exploring Parametric Modeling in Jewelry and Metal” on Tuesday, October 22, at 12:15 p.m. in Upton Hall 230 as the first talk in the fall 2019 “Artists on the Road: Travel As a Source of Inspiration” series.

Nabahbetian will share images created during her fall 2018 sabbatical, when she was an artist-in-residence at Indiana University Bloomington. She was researching parametric modeling in jewelry and metal, and said she found parallels to her traveling experiences.

“For example, I would start each day by setting research goals to achieve and often found myself heading in an unexpected direction,” she said. “This is much like planning a day of travel and discovering additional points of interest along the way.”

She added, “There were times when the code I was constructing did not work, and I had to problem-solve and search forums for answers. Perhaps the equivalent of taking the wrong subway and having to find your way back to where you started and begin again. Mishaps and difficulties during traveling are all a part of the adventure.”

Nahabetian received her bachelor of fine arts from Eastern Michigan University and her master of fine arts from Kent State University. Along with national exhibitions, Nahabetian’s artwork is on display in the permanent collections of Grand Valley State University and Bowling Green State University.

Artists on the Road is co-sponsored by the Art and Design Department and the Center for Global Engagement.
