Buffalo State led 38-32 at the intermission, but New Paltz opened the second half with a 12-5 run to take a 44-43 lead. Buffalo State reclaimed the lead on its next possession, and held the lead until New Paltz tied the game at 61-61 with 3:21 remaining. The Bengals grabbed the lead again, and held the Hawks off down the stretch, despite missing seven free throws over the final 40 seconds. Buffalo State shot just 46-percent (15-of-33) from the free throw line for the game.
Jones scored 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. John Lawal (Hempstead/Uniondale) scored 13 points and had six rebounds, and Jay Newton (Jamestown/Jamestown) had a career-high 11 points.
Maurice Douglas scored 17 points to lead the Hawks. Tony Cannon added 14 points, and Amseshem Foluke-Henderson had 10 points and 10 boards.
Buffalo State will travel to Fredonia on Tuesday night.
