Men’s Soccer Season Ends in Heartbreak at Cortland

CORTLAND, NY—Gary Luniewski (E. Meadow/E. Meadow) scored his second goald of the game in the 88th minute to force overtime, but Buffalo State (8-6-4) was eventually eliminated on penalty kicks (4-2) by host Cortland (11-6-1) today in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals. The game officially ended as a 3-3 tie following double-overtime.

Buffalo State led 1-0 at halftime after Luniewski’s first goal just under 11 minutes into the contest. Cortland pulled ahead early in the second frame with two goals in under two minutes, but the Bengals evened the score when Joshua Mitchell (Schenectady/S. Colonie) one-timed a loose ball past the Red Dragon goalkeeper.

Cortland went ahead again with just 3:01 remaining in regulation with an own goal by Buffalo State, but the Bengals rallied again when Luniewski deflected a corner kick just inside the right post with only 1:10 remaining in regulation.

Neither team could score in two overtime periods. Cortland eventually advanced to the conference semifinals after winning the penalty kick shootout, 4-2.

Cortland held a narrow 18-15 advantage in shots. Dan Corti (Amawalk/Somers) made four saves for Buffalo State.

Tony Schiappa (Williamsville/Williamsville East) had two assists for the Bengals, and Mitchell finished with a goal and an assist.
