A Look Ahead: This Week at Buffalo State

It’s a busy week on campus, and there are a lot of things to do. From seminars to study preparation classes to a fashion show, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a look at some of what’s happening this week.

GLC Seminar: 'Sediment Geochemistry and Nutrient Dynamics in the Upper Great Lakes'
Science and Mathematics Complex 161
Please join the Great Lakes Center for the seminar "Sediment Geochemistry and Nutrient Dynamics in the Upper Great Lakes," presented by Sergei Katsev, professor of physics at the University of Minnesota Duluth's Large Lakes Observatory. All are welcome.

Beyond and Back: Bridging the World Outside Your Classroom to the World Within
Campbell Student Union Assembly Halls
Beyond and Back is meant to bring the global and service-learning activities completed by our students and faculty full circle. Beyond and Back 2019 includes a keynote from alumna and international educator Crystal Holmes-Smith, ’15, ’16. In addition, speakers will present teacher candidates with information on how and why our graduates can teach abroad. A “walkabout,” an opportunity for past students to share their personal experiences and favorite moments, will bookend the event. Free and open to the public.

West African Drumming Ensemble with Diaspora Drum and Dance
Ciminelli Recital Hall
Celebrate the music and dance of West Africa and the African diaspora, brought to you by local group Diaspora Drum and Dance (Ringo Brill, Michelle Gigante, Gabriel Gutierrez, Tiffany Nicely), along with the Buffalo State West African Drum Ensemble directed by Tiffany Nicely. Free and open to the public.

International Culture Fiesta
Campbell Student Union Social Hall
The International Student Organization hosts its annual Cultural Fiesta by presenting some of the different cultures, foods, music, and dances that are celebrated all over the world. Event includes an international buffet, henna tattoo station, salsa and belly dancing, African drummers, and Middle Eastern music. Admission is $5, and $3 for students. Student tickets can only be purchased online. General admission tickets available at the Rockwell Hall Box Office.

25th annual Buffalo Niagara Ambassador Awards
Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State
The Ambassador Awards celebrates the accomplishments of our community leaders and student achievements. Celebrate this year's awardees: Taryn Moskal, '10, executive chef, Wegmans; Nicholas Del Nuovo, '12, assistant general manager, Delaware North; and Kevin Mulcahy, founding chair, Hospitality and Tourism Department. The ceremony begins in the Burchfield Penney Art Center's Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium at 5:30 p.m. Reception to follow in the Caudell Hall Statler Room and Russell J. Salvatore Demonstration Kitchen. Reservations required.

Why is childbirth so painful for black women? Join Black Active Minds for a discussion on why black women suffer from infertility more than other groups of women, childbirth complications, and why African American women aren't listened to when they are in pain.

Cinephiles Spring Film Series: 'In the Mood for Love'

The English Department will screen Wong Kai-wai’s romantic drama In the Mood for Love. Free and open to the public.

Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall
The Buffalo State Jazz Ensemble will perform under the direction of Rick Fleming, professor of music. Free and open to the public. For more information, call (716) 878-3005.

Digital Music Ensemble presents Invisible Cities
Ciminelli Recital Hall
Buffalo State’s Digital Music Ensemble will perform a free concert. The repertoire ranges from early electronic analog works to jazz fusion and avant-garde pieces, covering a variety of styles and approaches to exploring music and sound. Free and open to the public.

Public Service Recognition Week Conference
LoRusso Alumni and Visitor Center
This PSRW celebration is an opportunity for the Western New York public administration and nonprofit community to examine national and local issues affecting the lives of Americans. It will also serve as a vehicle for advancing communities of learning as a vehicle for local government/nonprofit/university collaborations leading to transformative community changes. 

Saturday, April 27, 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Runway: Reawakening
Campbell Student Union Social Hall
The Fashion and Textile Technology (FTT) Department hosts the 12th annual Runway student-produced fashion show. This year’s theme is “ReAwakening.” Tickets are $15 for the 3:00 p.m. show and $25 for the 8:00 p.m. show. VIP tickets are also available for $100 for the evening show, which includes a private catered reception and swag bag. Purchase tickets online or call (716) 878-3478.

Saturday, April 27, 5:00 p.m.
Lecture and Recital: Alex Welninski, Trumpet
Ciminelli Recital Hall
An evening of Johann N. Hummel, Paul Hindemith, Alan Hovhaness, and J.S. Bach performed by Alexander Welninski. Welninski studies in the studio of Kyle Resnick and will be accompanied by Susan Schuman. Reception to follow the performance. Free and open to the public.
