Literacy Clinics Offered for Students Needing Reading and Writing Help

Posted: December 16, 2003
The Buffalo State College Literacy Center will offer two programs for K-12 students who need additional help beyond the classroom with reading or writing.

Both programs, each offered at the cost of $75, provide diagnosis of reading and writing skills, as well as tutoring sessions to address specific literacy strengths and weaknesses. Program tutors are graduate students completing their literacy specialist certification or master’s degree in education who work under the guidance of experts in the reading field.

The “Classroom Teacher Diagnosis and Tutoring” program meets Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.; the “Literacy Specialist Clinic” program, the more intensive of the two programs, meets Thursdays from 4:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., or from 5:45 p.m. to 6: 45 p.m. Both programs begin the third week of February 2004.

Parents will receive instructional reports to share with classroom teachers at the conclusion of the programs.

Applications, including a necessary school information release form and instructions for completing, are available at the college’s Elementary Education and Reading Department website at http://www.buffalostate.edu/depts/elementaryed/, or by calling the department at (716) 878-5917. The application should be returned with a certified check or money order for $75 no later than Jan. 20, 2004. No personal checks will be accepted.
