Hayes to Present 'Artists on the Road' Talk

Posted: March 17, 2015

During a campus talk on Thursday, March 19, Shirley Hayes, associate professor of art education, will relate the beauty and excitement of traveling alone to such countries as Italy and Spain. Hayes’ presentation, held at 12:20 p.m. in Upton Hall 230, is free and open to the public.

This is the second lecture in the spring 2015 series, “Artists on the Road: Travel as Source of Inspiration” sponsored by the Design Department and International and Exchange Programs Office.

Hayes’ presentation “How Traveling Alone Can Be the Best” focuses on her extended trip to Italy. In Torremaggiore, Buffalo’s sister city, she spent time in various schools finalizing arrangements for a winter visit from Buffalo State students. She also will recap the splendor of some of Italy’s more well-known cities, such as Milano and Cinque Terra, and give her impressions of Madrid and Barcelona, Spain.

“Travel expands one’s world view, and especially one’s understanding of culture, life, and art,” said Hayes. “It broadens who we are and our ability to relate to others.”

Hayes’ teaching and professional experience includes 21 years in higher education, six years as art consultant with the Tennessee Department of Education, and 11 years as an art specialist in grades K-12 in East Tennessee public schools.

Alice Pennisi, associate professor of art education, will continue the “Artists on the Road” series on April 23 when she presents “Wherever I’m Not Is Home.”
