Graphic Design Students Win 11 ADDY Awards

Posted: March 11, 2020

Students in Buffalo State’s graphic design program took home the most awards of any school participating in this year’s American Advertising Federation (AAF) Buffalo competition, which was held March 6 at the Town Ballroom in Buffalo.

Seven students won 11 of the 21 American Advertising Awards (ADDY) for projects ranging from illustrations to brand identity campaigns that they created in advertising, web design, graphic design, motion graphics, and visual communication courses.

“All of the award-winners are abundantly talented,” said Richard Ross, associate professor of graphic design. “I’m proud of how they were able to execute class assignments at this level.”

Senior Andrea LoPiccolo won two gold awards for special event materials and animation of special effects, and senior Philip Miller received gold awards in the integrated brand identity campaign and animation of special effects categories.

Senior Emma Roberts won silver awards for integrated brand identity campaign and illustration campaign categories, while senior Crista Sukennik received two silvers for integrated brand identity campaigns. Juniors Andrew Miller, Robert Rivera, and Miranda Schiller also snagged silver awards for logo design, poster campaign, and publication design categories, respectively.

Only students who are AAF members are eligible to enter.

“Over the years, our graphic design majors have done well in ADDY competitions,” Ross said. “The diverse coursework required in our concentration enables students to enter multiple categories in the competition. Our three full-time faculty members are dedicated educators with prior full-time professional work experience in the communication design field. We aspire to graduate students who are total visual communicators prepared to work in a competitive landscape.”
