BUFFALO, NJ—William Paterson (3-4/1-3) converted a pair of blocked punts into 10 points and claimed a 17-14 victory over host Buffalo State (2-5/1-4) in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game today at Coyer Field.

Bruce Katkowski (Saddle Brook, NJ) caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from John Woodson (Bloomfield, NJ) on a fourth-and-14 play late in the third quarter, and the Pioneer converted the two-point conversion to put William Paterson ahead for good at 17-14 and complete the scoring.

William Paterson totaled just 181 yards of total offense on 59 plays. Starting quarterback Dan Lamego (North Arlington, NJ) was 8 of 18 for 86 yards. Kareem Moon (Staten Island, NY) had four catches for 51 yards, and Shaun Paluse (Haledon, NJ) led the Pioneers rushing attack with 34 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Mike Lamego (North Arlington, NJ) led the William Patterson defense with 11 tackles and an interception. Frank Musolino (Sewell, NJ) had 10 tackles, including two sacks.

Dan Lopez (Lancaster, NY) led the Buffalo State offense with 160 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 34 carries. Dan Aquilio (Depew, NY) was limited to just 6 of 31 passing for 86 yards with an interception. Bob Vesona (Depew, NY) added 65 rushing yards on seven carries. Jermaine Rose (Niagara Falls, NY) led the defense with eight tackles, including two for losses, and Ron Webber (Middle Island, NY) also had eight stops and a sack.

Buffalo State had 286 total yards of offense on 81 plays from scrimmage.

The Bengals opened the scoring with a 13-yard Lopez run late in the first quarter, capping an 11-play, 79-yard drive. William Paterson blocked a Buffalo State punt early in the second quarter, however, and took over on the Bengals’ 1-yard line. Paluse punched it in for the score just two plays later, but after a failed extra point attempt, the Bengals still led, 7-6.

The Pioneers took the lead at 9-7 with a Ricky Krautman (Franklin Lakes, NJ) 27-yard field goal early in the third quarter. Buffalo State did reclaim the lead at 14-9 when Lopez found the end zone for the second time from 16 yards, but Katkowski’s winning score came just 2:25 later.

Buffalo State will play at Western Connecticut State next Saturday at 1 p.m.
