Food Network Star and Author Alton Brown: April 11

Foodies, take heart. Alton Brown, star of the Food Network, is coming to the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall on Wednesday, April 11, for a 7:00 p.m. performance, "10 Things About Food I Feel Pretty Sure About."

The United Students Government (USG) is presenting Brown through the mandatory student activity fee.

Tickets for Buffalo State students are $5 and go on sale Monday, March 26 (one student ticket per ID). Remaining tickets will be priced at $25 and go on sale April 4. Brown, an Atlanta-based cookbook author and star of Good Eats, Iron Chef America, and Feasting on Asphalt, will regale the audience with his combination of comedy and kitchen science as part of the college’s Leadership Lecture Series.

In conjunction with the Year of the Arts, USG hosts this series featuring a well-known speaker each semester, paid for by student activity fees. In the fall, storied filmmaker Spike Lee came to campus. Lee not only spoke before a sold-out audience, he also visited with students in the college’s prestigious television and film arts (TFA) program and offered his advice on film careers.

“We wanted to recognize the Year of the Arts and also to highlight programs doing exceptional things that need to be brought to the attention of the public,” said Joshua Lipka, USG treasurer, referencing the choice of speakers and their connections to the TFA and hospitality programs.

“A lot of students know who Alton Brown is and are excited to hear him,” Lipka said.

Brown’s first book, I’m Just Here for the Food, won the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Cookbook and also was chosen by editors and readers on as one of the top 50 books of 2002.

Alton Brown’s Gear for Your Kitchen, his homage to kitchen tools and gadgetry, was published in 2003, followed by I’m Just Here for More Food, in 2004 and Feasting on Asphalt in 2008, which documented his motorcycle ride and food-sampling excursion from New Orleans to the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Minnesota.

His television show Good Eats was recognized in 2007 as a Peabody Award winner, a distinguished prize presented for excellence in broadcast news, education, and entertainment.
