Design Major Reflects on Haiti Trip

Design Major Reflects on Haiti Trip

Posted: October 19, 2016

Briana Alford, a junior wood/furniture major, will present the talk “The Journey Less Traveled” on Thursday, October 20, at 12:15 p.m. in Upton Hall 230.

Her talk marks the second in the yearlong series “Artists on the Road: Travel as Source of Inspiration” and is free and open to the public.

In partnership with the nonprofit organization Haitian Outreach Pwoje Espwa, Alford joined a team of nine Buffalo State students who made the first study tour to Borgne, Haiti, last May. Led by Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Director Yanick Jenkins, a Haiti native, and assisted by graduate intern Charlson Joseph, students participated in service-learning activities specific to the needs of the people of Borgne.

Alford said the trip provided a new perspective on what it means to be rich.

“Just because someone has fewer objects than you do does not mean you are richer,” she said. “It just means you have more things to lose.”

On campus, Alford serves as a resident assistant, a student ambassador, a United Students Government (USG) senator, and treasurer for Omega Phi Chi multicultural sorority.
