Concert by Tony Conrad at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center

Performance will take place on October 21 at 8:00 p.m.

Posted: October 1, 2005
The Burchfield-Penney Art Center is pleased to present Parallel History I by Tony Conrad on Friday, October 21 at 8:00 p.m. This performance is part of Beyond/In Western New York which was on view at the Burchfield-Penney from April 16 – August 14, 2005. Organized by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Beyond/In Western New York included more than 50 artists from Western New York, Western Pennsylvania, Northeast Ohio and Southern Ontario and was on view at 13 museums and galleries in Western New York.
A chamber work for eight amplified strings, Parallel History I is a bricolage of skewed appropriations from Western musical monuments, somewhat in the tradition of Anton Webern’s "arrangement" of a Bach fugue. In Parallel History I, the common practice harmony of the West has been "translated" into an alien scale using tones that were eclipsed by our standardized music notation. Parallel History I was written for Beyond/In Western New York, and this performance is a world premier.
Admission to this concert is free for members of the Burchfield-Penney and $5 for non-members. For more information, contact Don Metz at 878-6120 or by email at metzdj@buffalostate.edu.
